Student+ is an academic skills module which is designed to help students become effective, independent learners at third level.

We recognise that the move to University is a huge step and that there are many new skills to be learned in order to become a successful student.

On the course, students learn about academic conventions, study skills, writing techniques, using technology in learning, exam techniques, different learning styles and more.

Students who complete the module become confident and effective learners who can manage their workload well, succeed in assessments and feel comfortable in the University learning environment.

Student+ runs over 20 weeks throughout the academic year and consists of group classroom sessions, online activities and tutor support. Students who are given a place on this course are expected to attend 80% of the classroom sessions and complete a specific number of core and supplementary activities.

Using online communication tools offers enormous potential to make this course interactive, to move away from 'transmitting' information to students, and to encourage them to discuss their understanding of new material which can uncover problem areas or topics that need further explanation in the face-to-face environment.

More specifically, our aims in Student+ Online are

  • to develop digital literacy,
  • to promote online communication and collaboration as a valuable learning method
  • to reinforce material presented in the classroom and promote personal exploration of that content, and
  • to share and create resources such as links, videos, advice and more.

The module is currently open to selected students. Staff who would like to learn more about Student+ and how it may be of benefit to their pedagogical objectives are welcome to contact Bridget Gormley in the Access Office.
