- Welcome to all new Mature Students
Welcome to all new mature students. As you approach the beginning of term we want to highlight some important things to help you with your first few weeks at college:
- All mature students must attend General Orientation/Registration
- Try and register on your alocated day. Late application means that you are not a fully registered student and therefore you cannot get full benefits of student status.
- If waiting for Grant Approval it is better to register and pay the full fee first (€1577), if you can get the money, and then get refunded (except for €77.00 Student Levy) when the approval comes through.
- Learn to moodle fast. All NUIM students get access to Moodle, a place online where lecturers can communicate with you, post notes, presentations and links and do all sorts of online activities. There is also a Mature Student Area there where you’ll find useful study skills material, news and tips. Basic computers skills are essential to make the most of Moodle so avail of any training.
- Time management is essential. Try and organise your life so that your college life and studies gets prioritised as much as possible. Remember – the academic year is very short and your nearest and dearest can have you back for the holidays!
- Get into ‘study mode’ immediately. The year is short and you need to keep on top of things.
- Know how to access support if you need it. Main supports for mature students are the Mature Student Support Office, Mature Student Advisors in each Department and the Mature Student Society. Do ask for help if you run into problems.
- Join the Mature Student Society. They have their own Common Room and help, advice, tea, sympathy and gossip are always freely available.
