Information on Mature Students for Staff

Staff might come across mature students who are struggling with their studies particularly due to ‘mature student issues'. Have a look at our advice on mature students page for some typical problems this group can have.

Supporting students with disabilities

There are approximately 360,000 people with disabilities in Ireland - one in ten people. Society in general has a duty to ensure that everyone can take an active part in their community and the economy. Access can be a major problem for people with disabilities, but the larger problem can be be the lack of awareness and understanding of people with disabilities by those who don't have a disability. The following are general guidelines only to assist you to ensure that people with disabilities can access the same opportunities and services that others take for granted.

The Disability Advisors Working Network (DAWN) have produced a booklet with much of the information here as well as practical ways to enhance inclusive teaching. Hard copies are available from the Disability Office. Alternatively, you can download the PDF for printing here or request an alternative format from dssinfo@ucc.ie.

AHEAD have produced guidelines on good practice in for service and support providers in higher education. This document is available from directly from AHEAD. The Disability Office also has some copies on request.

Presentations from AHEAD's 20th Annual Conference held in NUIM in November 2008 are now available. These include presentations on supporting students with dyslexia, inclusive teaching, using techology in teaching and more.
